We have seen so many great fall festivities as we travel the US and know that many campgrounds go out of their way during this season with Halloween decorations and activities. As pumpkins begin to appear and the weather cools, we found a few great spots for you to plan a weekend for a safe and special trick or treating.

Tannenhill Ironworks in Alabama was our first foray into the world of Halloween camping. It also introduced us to seasonal camping. Here, locals park their rigs for the month of October or longer and come out on weekends to getaway and visit with camping friends. They also decorate their sites to the hilt with Halloween decorations. At the end of the month, there are decorating winners announced and trick or treating. It made for great evening walks and very friendly neighbors. While it might be hard to get in to the campground. we highly recommend a stop if you can make it. Plus during the day, the campground has great historical structures and sites to visit!

In Virginia Beach, the Holiday Trav-L Park has fun during October! Instead of waiting until Halloween, this park celebrates all month with special concerts, scavenger hunts and other festive activities. They focus on kids too with weekly candy hunts and costume contests.

Gatlinburg, TN focuses on fall throughout the town. They have set a Guiness World Record for the most scarecrows displayed at more than 3,000! Of course, you can also find lots of pumpkins, fall colors and adult treats. With all the artists and shops around, you are sure to find a special gift for yourself or as a start to the next holiday season.
While we have not visited, we have heard that Land-o-Pines Family Campground in Covington, LA offers a great celebration. At least one weekend focuses on zombies with a costume contest and obstacle course. .The highlight is the Great Pumpkin Race where participants transform ordinary squash into world-class race cars.
No matter where or how you are spending it, we hope your October is as spooky and fun as you hope! Now tell us in the comments, where you think we should plan to visit next October!
