Best Trick or Treating RV Style

September 16, 2023 By Debra Benton Leave a Comment

We have seen so many great fall festivities as we travel the US and know that many campgrounds go out of their way during this season with Halloween decorations and activities. As pumpkins begin to appear and the weather cools, we found a few great spots for you to plan a weekend for a safe and special trick or treating.

Tannehill, AL

Tannenhill Ironworks in Alabama was our first foray into the world of Halloween camping. It also introduced us to seasonal camping. Here, locals park their rigs for the month of October or longer and come out on weekends to getaway and visit with camping friends. They also decorate their sites to the hilt with Halloween decorations. At the end of the month, there are decorating winners announced and the kids enjoy trick or treating to each rig. Everyone was very friendly and we had a lot of fun on evening walks checking out the decorations. With the locals quickly filling the campground, it can be hard to get in but we highly recommend a stop. We were able to get a last-minute dry site for two nights so definitely try.

And during the day, you can explore the historical structures and sites in this campground. This state park is worth a visit any time of year with its demonstations, hiking trails, and artifacts from Alabama’s iron industry.

Virginia Beach

In Virginia Beach, VA the Holiday Trav-L Park has a lot of fun during October! They don’t wait until Halloween weekend. They celebrate all month with special concerts, scavenger hunts and other festive activities. They focus on kids too with weekly candy hunts and costume contests.

Gatlinburg, TN

Gatlinburg, TN has a lot to entice the family to visit with its entertainment options and restaurants. But the season around Halloween is special. As the colors change in the Smokey Mountains, fall is the focus throughout town.

They have set a Guiness World Record for the most scarecrows displayed at more than 3,000! You will also find lots of pumpkins, fall colors and adult treats. With all the artists and shops around, you are sure to find a special gift for yourself or to get started on shopping for the upcoming holiday season.

Other Options

While we have not visited, we have heard that Land-o-Pines Family Campground in Covington, LA offers a great celebration. At least one weekend focuses on zombies with a costume contest and obstacle course. .The highlight is the Great Pumpkin Race where participants transform ordinary squash into world-class race cars.

No matter where or how you are spending it, we hope your October is as spooky and fun as you hope!

Now tell us in the comments, where is your favorite Halloween getaway!
