Anxious much? Easing your travel anxiety

July 12, 2019 By Liz 2 Comments

Welcome to Day 5 of Two Weeks of Travel Tweaks. Today we’re talking about how to ease your travel anxiety. And if you’ve been following me for more than 5 seconds, you know it’s a real, real thing!

Plan for anxiety

We plan for overnight stays. We plan for visit’s to Aunt Mary. We even plan to pee breaks.

But we don’t ever seem to plan for anxiety or nerves, although those are 100% bound to happen!

  • Allow for frequent stops to break up driving nerves and restless legs that start to make you and your travel companions crazy.
  • Plan overnighters where you feel safe and comfortable. Spending the night in Walmart is great on your wallet, but if it just makes you too nervous or wound up, skip it.
  • Account for procrastination. If you know you’re going to put something off until last minute, schedule it into your day. Block off 8-10am for packing up your rig. Put an alarm on your phone or write it on the calendar. Whatever you need to do to make sure it gets done and you don’t push it off, causing you wicked stress.
  • Spend time offline. Seriously! You can spend way too much time on social media comparing your trip to someone else’s. Get off the internet and into your travels!

Create an anti-anxiety fund.

Your spreadsheet is on point. Your envelope system is flawless.

But sometimes you are just too stressed and need a little extra for something to relax you. Save an extra 10% of your budget for anxiety splurges.

Get a massage. Go out to eat. Rent a nice car for the afternoon and drive around the beach with the top down.

WHAT.EVER. Stash away some guilt-free cash to spend however you’d like in anxious moments.

Establish a routine.

This is something I am the worst at. Traveling throws me off so hard! Whether you’re traveling indefinitely, or for a summer trip… a routine can make or break you.

Set your alarm and make your coffee at the same time each day. Yes, get up at a decent hour! It’s going to help you so much!

[…] While you probably don’t have a 40ft rig or something, you still need to learn how to drive your RV in all situations. Especially because you won’t have someone to take over for you when the anxiety sets in after a long travel day. (For tips on anxiety management while traveling, click here!) […]
